Growing up in Texas, going to college in Oklahoma, and working in Kansas City, MO this summer, Sara Linn has worked hard to cultivate a variety of experiences during her college career, yet she is only heading into her junior year at Oklahoma State University. Sara is another AFA friend (can you see how much of an impact AFA has had on my life?) and she is interning with Agriculture Future of America as their programming intern this summer! This is a perfect fit for her as she is studying Agricultural Leadership. Well, almost perfect, Sara has a hard time with … [Read more...]
A Soil Renaissance
Sure, I’m working in marketing this summer, but my background over the last few years is in agronomy (agrono…what?). I’ve worked with farmers to help them pick seed, set spraying schedules, I.D. weeds and pests, and have collected more data than most would care to see. As an “agronomy intern”, I worked extensively with soil fertility; testing client’s soil to see what we could add to make it a healthier, happier environment for the plant. Traditionally, that’s what agronomists focus on, making sure the plant has everything it needs to grow. But now we have to dig a … [Read more...]
Intern Spotlight – Josh Stutrud
This week's Intern Spotlight is heading to rural North Dakota (I feel like most of NoDak is rural, but you get the point!) to chat with Josh Stutrud of Stutrud Farms and North Dakota State University. Josh and I are both involved with Agriculture Future of America; we met at the AFA Policy Institute in D.C. this spring where our knack for quick jokes and sarcasm made us instant friends! The first night we were in D.C. I learned how to properly say "bison" and that the NDSU mascot is in fact, not a buffalo. Josh will be graduating from NDSU in December … [Read more...]
Settling in – Internship Update
What’s up, Kansas City?! After spending a few days in Lexington with Alltech last week, I headed back to Michigan, packed up my belongings, said my goodbyes, and hit the road to Missouri for my internship. Let’s be honest, 85% of what I brought with me was clothes. And 10% were boots. The essentials, ya know? The first week in KC has been a great one. My roommate is pretty cool, the house is nice + in a great neighborhood, and my job is something that is new and exciting for me. Granted, sitting in front of a computer for 8+ hours a day is not as fun as I … [Read more...]
Intern Spotlight – Jessica Lietzke
As I started thinking about my summer intern spotlight series, I knew that Jessica Lietzke had to be featured. Jessi is as passionate about agriculture as she is about the Spartans, and I want to share that excitement with each of you! Jessica and I know each other through our involvement in various student groups at MSU. Jessi has also been posting pictures of her work this summer over on her Instagram channel, so feel free to check her out! Jessica is interning with WinField Forage Management this summer; this internship is a great fit for Jessi as she is an … [Read more...]
